Formulas

  • Discount amountAmount = Original × (Discount % ÷ 100)
  • Final priceFinal = Original − Amount
  • Discount percentageDiscount % = (Original − Final) ÷ Original × 100

Watch out: Successive discounts do not add together. 20% off followed by a further 10% off is 28% off in total, not 30%.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a discounted price?

Multiply the original price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). A 25% discount on 80.00 gives 80 × 0.75 = 60.00.

How do I work out the discount percentage from two prices?

Subtract the sale price from the original, divide by the original, and multiply by 100. A price cut from 50.00 to 40.00 is a 20% discount.

Do two discounts add together?

No. Successive discounts multiply. 20% off followed by 10% off is 0.8 × 0.9 = 0.72 of the original price, which is 28% off in total.

How do I find the original price before a discount?

Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). If an item costs 60.00 after 25% off, the original price was 60 ÷ 0.75 = 80.00.
